When I Say I Do is a collaborative album by singer Matthew West and was released on July 13, 2017. The album features collaborations with some of country music’s most notable artists including Carrie Underwood and Tim McGraw. This is a “must have” for any fan of Matt West or anyone who enjoys listening to heartfelt love songs! With many catchy melodies that are sure to get stuck in one’s head, this emotional release will be essential for fans of the genre as it balances heartwarming ballads with more upbeat tunes such as “Good Ol’ Days.” One thing is certain after playing this CD from start to finish; When I Say I Do will be one of the best albums from 2017.
The album begins with “When I Say I Do” which is a ballad in which Matt West sings about his wife and how he feels when she says yes to complete their vows, “I’m gonna walk you down the aisle/And say these words that’ll bind us as one.” This track sets up listeners for what is going to happen on this release since it starts off slow but picks up speed throughout. The second song, titled “Love’s Coming Back,” has an upbeat country feel and features Carrie Underwood singing alongside Matt West.
This collaboration highlights both vocalists’ strengths while also highlighting each other’s weaknesses; they are able to complement each other musically.
The album ends with “I Do” which is a song that features the same lyrics as an earlier track, but this time it’s sung by Carrie Underwood. It’s also at a slower tempo and is more of a ballad than the first version was. The listener hears both voices in harmony on this final note before Matt West says his vows to close out this long-awaited new release from him.
The style of songs he has written on do will remind listeners why they loved music from artists like Lifehouse and Coldplay back when their albums came out because there are some similar sounds here too. Even though it feels like years between these releases, each one holds up well against them all thanks to Matt West’s talents at writing lyrics and melodies that are memorable.
He has found a way to make this album feel new, but also comfortably familiar for his listeners in the process as well. The key is understanding who Matt West is so he doesn’t have to try too hard by putting out songs that sound like what other artists are doing which can be done even if it’s not on purpose. He puts himself into each song with these projects because they’re made from experiences of living life or meeting people throughout his travels, so there will always be something unique about them no matter when they come out or how old some of them may seem now. This time around with do, Matthew West does an excellent job showing off everything he brings to the table musically.
“I’m not sure what’s going to happen in the future, but I do want to be able to say that everything on this album is me,”
he said about his latest project. “It was important for me with these songs because they are some of my best work.”

A lot of artists are put in a position where they’re told to do what’s “popular” or that this is the next big thing. It doesn’t always work out, but we can be grateful for musicians who understand their own identities and don’t feel pressured into doing something that makes them uncomfortable. They know what works well with their style and sound so they can serve up exactly the right music at just the right time without any strings attached.
I’m not sure what’s going to happen in the future, but I do want to be able to say that everything on this album is me,” he said about his latest project. “It was important for me with these songs because they are some of my best work. I think the lyrics are really, really good and that’s what makes it important for me to be able to say ‘when I say I do,’ then these songs need to represent who I am.”
Matthew West will make his seventh studio album release on September 30. This is going to be a special one because he’ll offer up all new material with no outside influences. He may have been thinking about this idea since as far back as 2010 when he said “I’m not sure what’s going to happen in the future, but I do want to be able to say that everything on this album is me,” which was only two years after releasing Live Forever: Songs of Worship Volumes One and Two.
The record is titled When I Say I Do and it will be released on September 30. He’s releasing the album under his own label, Black Sheep Records, which is a subsidiary of Capitol Christian Music Group.
“When I say ‘I do’ to this record—to these songs—then that means they need to represent who I am,” said West in a press release. “I think se songs because they are some of my best work.”
West says he wrote most of the new material during downtime at home while raising his family with wife Amanda Homesley-West and daughter Isabella Rosemary West whom were both born premature; when not writing music, he tends to spend time playing board games and listening to old vinyls or records. “There are things that I want to say and all these songs came to me,” he said in a press release for the album, “I felt like it was time—it’s been six years since my last record so I’ve had a lot of life happen.” He continued: “For this one, I wanted to write about what people go through on their way there – marriage is not just ’til death do us part’ but includes every day until then when you really start living your lives together as husband and wife.” The first single from When I Say ‘I Do’ is titled “Make Up Your Mind”. It will be released later today with an accompanying video which West says draws
